[DYAMENTOWSKI Przybysław] - Polish Chronicle by Prokosz [pseud.] in the 10th century written. With additions of the chronicle of Kagnimir, writer of the 11th century and with critical footnotes of the commentator of the 18th century. First printed from a newly invented manuscript. Warsaw 1825, Nakł. N. Glücksberg. 16d, pp. [4], XVIII, 292. broch.
Spine partially cracked, covers slightly rubbed, otherwise good condition. Bzowski library stamp. "Chronicle" came entirely from the pen of P. Dyamentowski (1694-1774), historian, "main profession was to falsify genealogical deductions and chronicles. He wrote pseudo-historical works, later claiming that they were the works of famous ancient or medieval writers, or even inventing authors. He left in manuscript numerous fabricated family genealogies and apocryphal chronicles of alleged early medieval Polish chroniclers Wojan, Prokosz, Kagnimir, Boczula, Jardo and Sviatomir. The most famous Prokosz Chronicle was published in print in 1825 by Hipolit Kownacki" (Wikipedia). The victim of the fraud was J. U. Niemcewicz, who presented the chronicle to the Warsaw Society of Friends of Science in good faith. The forgery was discovered by J. Lelewel finding an 18th-century manuscript indicating Dyjamentowski's authorship.
