CHODŹKO Leonard [1800-1871] - Polish historian, geographer, cartographer, publisher. He came from an old Lithuanian noble family of the Kościesza coat of arms. In 1816-17 he studied at Vilnius University [bachelor's degree].He belonged to the Filarets, where he met Adam Mickiewicz. He was the personal secretary of the eminent composer Michal Kleofas Oginski, while working for him, he organized the archive of the Oginski family. In 1822, due to the persecution of the tsarist authorities, he left Lithuania forever. While in France, he supported participants in the November Uprising. He wrote and published in print hundreds of historical, geographical and statistical works, made cartographic measurements of dozens of historical and geographical maps.
The three-volume edition of "La Pologne historique, litteraire, monumentale et pitterosque" is a work of information and propaganda. It tells the history of Poland from the earliest times, describes the folklore and culture of the country on the Vistula River. It contains information about numismatics, medals, culture and art. It describes cities, sights, monuments. Undeniable proof of the great importance of this work are the graphics contained in it, made in intaglio and aquatint technique among which we can find, among others, portraits of kings, hetmans, commanders, aristocracy, views of cities and villages, monuments, notes, historical scenes.
