Fr. Chmielowski's encyclopedia has a factual layout, i.e. the entries are not arranged alphabetically, but are grouped into thematic sections. The news covering more than a dozen fields of knowledge is taken from more than a hundred authors, starting with the ancients, such as Pliny the Elder, and ending with his contemporaries; many of them are accompanied by the author's commentary, which is not devoid of criticism, in others the author cites outstanding personalities of antiquity to brand his own insights.
It is from the New Athens that the famous HORSE AS IT IS, EVERYONE SEES and goats - a smelly kind of animal, for the canon priest saw no point in describing the animals so prevalent at the time. There was also advice on how to protect yourself from spells: "Above the door a wolf's snout for a condom from witchcraft." In addition to the entries, the work contains many stories, anecdotes and curiosities, such as descriptions of monsters, for example, dragons, cyclops and blemmies. These stories, as is contemporarily assumed, were primarily intended to arouse curiosity in the reader. Chmielowski also described various countries of the world even very distant ones such as China and Japan ("INSULTS AND THE SIXTH IN ASIA OF THE GREAT JAPANESE IMPERIUM").
New Athens was subjected to crushing criticism in the Age of Enlightenment and is sometimes cited to this day as an example of the darkness of Saxon times. On the other hand, some believe that such opinions are mainly voiced by those who have not actually encountered the work of Fr. Chmielowski.
