Kijowski: "the first novel about the construction of socialism, the subject of which is neither any of the partial phenomena accompanying the contemporary historical process, nor a panoramic description of its most important features. The subject [...] is the general problem of our contemporary times: how to live in a socialist society" (quoted by M. Fik "Culture after Yalta", 1954 20). The culture.pl website reads: "The most ideological book, written according to the canon of socialist realist rules, was his [K. Brandys'] novel 'Citizens,' published in 1954. Hailed as a 'masterpiece of socialist realism,' it took third place in the 'Ten Best Books of the Decade' poll announced by 'New Culture.'" In 1966 the writer left the party, and in the late 1970s became involved in the democratic opposition.
