Bobinskaya's book introduces us to the beginning of the pioneer movement, that unparalleled communist children's movement involving millions of children in the Soviet Union today. The book was first published in Polish in Moscow in 1924, and "was the first novel about the pioneer movement." Translations into Russian and Western European languages followed. "It was the first book to tell the children of workers in capitalist countries about the pioneers, the small builders of socialism in the Soviet Union" (all quotes from the editorial introduction of the 1951 edition). The author was one of the first people to be awarded the Order of the Labor Banner.
