Bible in engravings by Gustave Dore, old and new testament.
French artist Gustave Doré (1832-1883) created several hundred outstanding illustrations depicting Bible stories during his life. These illustrations were published in bibles published in various languages in 19th century Europe and later in the Americas. Many masters undertook illustrations of biblical motifs, and Doré is among the best known. Doré's realistic style breathed new life into these stories. The mosaics, frescoes and stone reliefs that had dominated for centuries, along with their iconographic precision combined with woodcut impressions (the ubiquitous halos over individual objects), gave a caricatured feel to many biblical stories. However, Gustave Doré's figures and places are realistic. The artist's works as well as his competence were often criticized by his contemporaries. By the same token, however, these illustrations have stood the test of time and are considered among the best depictions of important biblical events.
