Anthony of Padua was a Portuguese Catholic priest and Franciscan friar. He was born and raised in a wealthy family in Lisbon, Portugal, and died in Padua, Italy. Known by his contemporaries for his powerful sermons, expert knowledge of Scripture and undying love and devotion to the poor and sick, he was one of the fastest canonized saints in Church history, canonized less than a year after his death. He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII on January 16, 1946.
