"Beelzebub's Sonata" - a drama that takes up the Faustian theme, while pondering the problem of the artist's freedom, his role and duties to society. The play is set in the Hungarian town of Mordovar, which, according to many critics, is extremely reminiscent of our Zakopane. With the writing of "Beelzebub's Sonata," completed in June 1925, Witkacy ended his intense playwriting career. After "Sonata," he wrote only "The Shoemakers" in 1934 and two or three unpreserved plays. A book edition of "Sonata" was published in 1938.
