Lot description Show orginal version

Lentijs ad Danubium 1618. excudebat Johannes Plancus. 10x17 cm, pp. (28), 417, woodcuts in text, 19th century half leather binding. Good condition (ownership stamp, lower section of title page cut off [no harm to text], isolated soiling and rust spots, binding abrasions, slight trace of dampstain at bottom of pages).

First edition. Volume I (three books) of Epitome Astronomiæ Copernicanæ, concerning the heliocentric system of astronomical works, divided into seven books and three volumes (Doctrina sphærica, Physica cœlestis, Doctrina theorica), published by Johannes Kepler in 1618-1621. Intended to be an easy-to-understand textbook, Epitome was written in the form of questions and answers, using a technique typical of many textbooks of the time . The work was written at a difficult time for the author - his mother was accused of witchcraft and threatened with torture, and Volume I of the Epitome, due to its support of heliocentrism, was quickly placed on the Index of Prohibited Books (it was only removed in 1835). However, it became the most important theoretical source for supporters of the Copernican idea in the 17th century.
