On October seventeenth, 1886, the first day of the school year in Italy, Amicis' novel Cuore - The Heart (Polish edition 1887) was published and was an immediate success. Over the next few months it was published many times, translated into many languages. The book, a literary masterpiece, became a permanent part of the canon of literature for children and young people around the world. At a time when kindness is an unfashionable concept, television replaces family ties, and school does not always transmit good role models, it is worth taking a trip to the past, when love, friendship and courage meant as much as they should.
