Slavs in the early Middle Ages occupied large swaths of central and eastern Europe. Originally, in the family of Indo-European languages, they were one group with the Balts. Nowadays, most researchers tend to look for the precursor of the Slavs before their great expansion in the northern basin of the Dnieper and Desna rivers. In Europe, since the mid-19th century, historical science has sought to establish the features of Slavic culture. In later studies (the second half of the 20th century), researchers came to the conviction that after the cessation of the migration of peoples, there was no longer a unified culture of the Slavs. The first researchers concerned with establishing the features of Slavic culture were primarily Alexander Brückner and Lubor Niederle. Russian researchers such as Basilov, Dovzhenok, Grekov, Yushkov or Koropatkin tried to prove that Slavic culture had its origins in the East, these findings were also confirmed in contemporary studies by Czech and Polish authors and archaeological sources, among others.
