Adam Mickiewicz Mrs. Twardowska Published by M. Arcta in Warsaw 1928(but dedication dated December 1927). Engravings and cover art by Antoni Gawinski 27(1)p. including 9 full-page color illustrations and black and white il. Stains and scuffs on cover, stamps and signatures, a few stains, in a few places - pencil, marker: in margin inscription "Tfardoski" For. ca: 20x17 cm The famous Mickiewicz story after 1900 not only did not lose its popularity, but also lived to see many new editions, including illustrated ones. The most famous of these was adorned with a cover and illustrations - one of the most popular illustrators of Young Poland - Antoni Gawinski. In the flood of designs made by the master, it is among his most expressive compositions, and therefore the best. It owes a lot to the contrasts: the sketchy silhouette of the devil, outlined in black, juxtaposed with the colorful stain of Mr. and Mrs. Twardowski's outfit. It is only a pity that it is already a funeral work of Polish Art Nouveau, as it was published in 1928." source: Jan Straus, Now Cover, Warsaw 2021, p. 1343 |
