A unique illustrated edition of 1686 (original edition in 1684) ofone of the most important compilations of medical knowledge in the 17th century. Author Théophile Bonet (1620-1689) is considered the founder of pathological anatomy and a forerunner of such authors as Giambattista Morgagni and Albrecht von Haller, who considered themselves his imitators. The work contains 32 plates (one plate is missing from the second volume), some fold-out and larger than the book format, though it is folio. The copperplates depict parts of the human body, animals, plants, as well as unnatural creatures, various monsters and human deformities.
Period binding full embossed leather in db condition with reparations and restorations to the leather especially on the spine; spine embossed and gilt with floral designs and title; handwritten note from the period on the pre-title page; interior in average condition, occasionally stains but dry; missing from the first volume pp. 146-147, with no apparent loss in the folding, probably an error by the bookbinder or printer; one board loose; overall db condition.
