J. Zemla (1887-1941) - was born in Polanka Wielka near Oświęcim. Social activist and educator of cadres of the Polish Legions. Instructor of the Riflemen's Association. Exile to Siberia in 1914-1921, participant in the Siberian campaign of the 5th Polish Rifle Division with the rank of captain. Judge of the courts of the reborn Republic of Poland in Cieszyn, Katowice, Królewska Huta (now Chorzow) and Mikolow. Pilsudnik. Co-founder, activist and president of the first Association of Siberians in Katowice. Arrested and murdered by the Germans in Mathausen-Gusen concentration camp. On September 20, 2021, a commemorative plaque in honor and memory of the doctor was unveiled in Katowice, funded by the IPN's Branch Office for Commemoration of Struggle and Martyrdom in Katowice.
