NOTICE of the establishment of a temporary Municipal Authority, i.e., the City Council of Krakow. By the highest order of July 30 of the current year, it has been ordered that a temporary Municipal Council for the City of Cracow [...] be established by means of election by the citizens [...] in order to maintain [...] peace and order in the City [...]. Double-sided print on 4 pages form. 39.5x25.3 cm. In front of the text printed "N. 51 K.P.". "The Spring of Nations brought also this change, that self-government was restored: City Council coming from the election of citizens. The council consists of 40 councilors (30 Christians and 10 Jews). Also elected were 12 deputies (9 Christians and 3 Jews). Barely 1,071 people were eligible to vote, as only homeowners, those with university degrees, pastors and superiors of other faiths, scholars, writers, journalists, and anyone paying tax above 7 zloty 15 gr. were eligible to vote. Thus, the entire poorer population was deprived of the right to vote" ("Chronicle of Cracow". Kr. 1996, p. 187). The first election was held on September 25, 1848.
