Stains, repaired margins of several pages; 5 pages missing (pp. 1-2, 15-18, 451-454)-replaced by common copies on old paper. In print, author's name in Latin (Joannes Amos Comenius). A five-language (including Polish) thematic pictorial dictionary by Jan Amos Comenius, with numerous woodcuts colored in the period. Illustrations from a much earlier edition were used, judging by their style and execution. At the beginning is a biography of Comenius in Czech.
"Orbis pictus" is one of the most popular works of J. A. Comenius (1592-1670) - a Czech educator and philosopher, Protestant reformer, senior general of the Czech Brethren, active for many years in Leszno and Silesia. The book, which is an illustrated encyclopedia, was first published in 1658 in Nuremberg in two languages - Latin and German. Over time, the number of languages grew to include Polish. Enjoying great popularity, the textbook had about 250 editions, 36 of which included Polish. "Orbis pictus" is"the first book written with children in mind [...]. The work is considered one of the first picture books" (Wikipedia). "The entire work was divided into 150 chapters, such as botany, zoology, religion, but also cuisine or feasting, combining scientific and theoretical issues with practical skills [...]. This specific primer had a long-term impact on children's education and was a pioneering work using visual techniques in the way of teaching the youngest" (M.
