Description:
Józef Kobyłecki (1801-1867) - Polish traveler, artillery officer in the Russian army. For refusing to take part in the fight against the Polish insurgents (November Uprising), he was punitively transferred to Tobolsk, from where he traveled extensively in southern and eastern Siberia in 1831-34.
He visited, among others, Tomsk, Omsk, Kiachta, Irkutsk, was at Lake Baikal and reached the border of China. Upon his return to Poland (1835), he published the two-volume News of Siberia ..., which at the time was one of the richest sources of knowledge about Siberia in Polish writing.
