"Wratislavia", view dated on plate 1587, lower left.
Original 16th century etching with very striking period color, framed. Dimensions of the view 36.1 x 48.7 cm, including the frame 50.8 x 60.9 cm (without passe-partout, the whole sheet is visible).
The view was included in one of the seven editions of the fourth volume of "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" by G. Braun and F. Hogenberg published in Cologne between 1588 and 1617. The entire work had a total of 6 volumes, which were created between 1572 and 1618.
The engraving was reused in 1657 - when Amsterdam publisher J. Janssonius took over the copperplate and collected it in a collection of city views under the title" Theatrum exhibens Illustriores Principesque...". .
The binding has not been opened, hence it is difficult to specify the specific edition, from the front they do not differ.
Perspective view of Breslau probably based on survey plans by Frederik Hendriks Vroom and Friedrich Gross from 1578. At the bottom in the corners a legend describing the 77 most important locations.
Condition: several inches of paper cracking along the atlas fold at the bottom, and a smaller one in the margin at the top, otherwise typical yellowing and discoloration. Old Biedermaier-style binding, nice, but with a few surface scratches.
