A comprehensive catalog to the exhibition Metaphor and Myth. Literary and Historical Motifs in Polish Art at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Century / Metaphor and Myth. literary and Historical Motifs in Polish Art at the Turn of the 19th Century is the result of cooperation between the National Museum in Szczecin and museums from Riga and Tallinn, where exhibitions took place in 2007-2008. The publication contains 104 color reproductions of works by prominent Polish artists working at the turn of the century (painting, sculpture, graphics). Each illustration is accompanied by notes containing iconographic and stylistic information. The catalog is divided into thematic chapters. Painted History and Romantic Uprisings shows the influence of historical events, patriotic uprisings, folk legends and Romantic literature on the art discussed. In the next section, entitled Polish Landscape, one can find melancholy, mysticism, idyllic countryside moods and native folklore. Subsequent chapters are devoted to artists of the fin de siècle era, in whose work decadence and fascination with Orientalism appear. The catalog presents the relationship existing between literature and visual arts, explains the meaning of metaphorical representations in art, which was influenced by the geopolitical situation, historical past, religion and myths.
