Charles Fontana & Cie. - a renowned Parisian jewelry company run by Charles Fontana. The company's roots date back to 1840, when Charles' father, Swiss by origin, Thomas Fontana established his jewelry workshop in the arcades of the Galerie de Beaujolais in the Palais-Royal. After the founder's death in 1861, his nephew Joseph Fontana took over the business. Charles Fontana joined the family business in 1871 and over the following decades continued his father's legacy by creating high-end jewelry objects that were objects of desire for the French bourgeoisie. By 1881, Charles Fontana was already running the business on his own (his nephew had set up his own workshop operating under the name Fontana Frères), and in 1896 the company's headquarters moved to 13 Rue Royale. The Fontana family business was included in Volume III of "La Bijouterie Française au XIXe Siècle" by Henri Vever and ranked among some of the most prestigious jewelry workshops.
