The central representation presents the Virgin Consoler of all the afflicted. The circulation of this iconography experienced considerable fortune from the late 17th century, following a miracle performed by the icon in the Church of the Transfiguration on Ordynka Street in Moscow. Crowded around the Virgin are numerous supplicant faithful: the offended, the naked, the pilgrims, the hungry, the afflicted, and the sick.
