Biography
In the 1920s he was the dominant artistic personality of the era. Beginning in 1910, in response to Cubism, he painted almost monochromatic compositions composed of geometrized, cylindrical, simplified forms, easily readable in their peculiar realism. He built expressive compositions from them, at first associated with the cult of technical civilization, machinery and industry, then more generally with the everyday life of average people. Characteristic of his works is the interplay of a strong, fluid contour line closely enclosing the depicted forms, with patches of pure color. Circa. 1924 the artist became interested in architecture and wall painting: he created decorative compositions, often of monumental proportions. He collaborated with purist artists: Pierre Jeanneret and architect Le Corbusier. He designed theater decorations, textiles, stained glass and mosaics, practiced sculpture, applied graphics, worked in film and ceramics. He was a talented educator, theorist and popularizer of art.
