The main character of this nautical novel is Smętek, but his character is portrayed here differently than in Stefan Żeromski or Melchior Wańkowicz - not as evil and Germanic, but as a Kashubian "good devil," aware of the secret craft and art of sailing, leading outstanding individuals to great goals.
