Biography
Italian painter, illustrator and sculptor of Jewish origin. Modigliani owes his modern fame primarily to his paintings depicting nudes, considered scandalous in his time and accepted only later. He spent his youth in Italy, where he studied the art of antiquity and the Renaissance. In 1906 he moved to Paris. There he came into contact with significant artists like Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncu?i. His life was marked by lung disease. As a child, he felt a calling to become an artist during one of his fever attacks. At the age of 35 years and six months, he died of tuberculosis. Information about Modigliani's life is based on only a few certain documents, so the legend about him was mainly created only after his death. Modigliani's work is mainly paintings and drawings. From 1909-14, however, he devoted himself mainly to sculpture. The main motif of his work, both in sculptures and paintings, is the human being. Alongside these are a few paintings depicting landscapes. Modigliani did not paint interiors or still lifes. He often referred to the Renaissance in his works. He also used elements of African art popular in his time. However, he did not join any contemporary direction in art like Cubism or Fauvism. Amedeo Modigliani's art was only marginally successful during his lifetime; it was only after his death that he became more popular and his works achieved high prices.
