Graphic for Book II of the Dunciad by Alexander Pop - copperplate 18th/19th century

Handmade paper, etching, format : 8.5 x 15 [cm].

"During the speech, all the listeners fell asleep under the canopy. Even the speaker took a nap behind the lectern."

Under the graphic a quote from the Second Book of Dunciad : "And now to this side, now to that they nod,. As verse, or prose, infuse the drowsy god. " lines 361-64.

Alexander Pope (born May 21?/31, 1688 in London, died May 30, 1744 in Twickenham) - a leading poet of the English Enlightenment, a declared Catholic and Tory.
