In the portrait, Antwerp historian and jurist Gaspar Gevaerts (Gevartius) is depicted in half pose, facing ¾ to the left, seated behind a desk, at work, holding a pen in his right hand. In the depth of the desk stands a bust of the Roman emperor against a background of a shelf of books.
