[OPOLE, ŻAGAŃ, BYTOM, PRUSSIA PRINCE] - George Frederick Hohenzollern (1539-1603); anonymous, ca. 1820; steel. cz.-b.; st. bdb.; engraving dimensions: 69x87 mm; GEORG FRIEDRICH, Marggraf zu Brandenburg; [Catalogue of portraits... does not note] .
George Frederick Hohenzollern was Margrave of Ansbach and Bayreuth, Duke of Carniola, Duke of Opole and Racibórz, and later of Zagan, lord of Bytom, Tarnowskie Góry and Bogumin. In 1578 he became, with Stefan Batory's approval, guardian of the mentally ill Prince of Prussia. He named Joachim Frederick, later Elector of Brandenburg, as his heir. He can be called the spiritual father of the later state of Brandenburg-Prussia, and eventually the Kingdom of Prussia.
