NORWID Cyprian Kamil (1821-1883) - Sibilla. 1863.
Etching, dry needle form.12x6,6 cm on sheet form. 13x7,8 cm. Title "Sibilla" engraved on the plate above the lower edge of the composition. Work signed and dated on the plate, in the upper right corner: "C Norwid f. / 1863". The "bard" depicted in the engraving, in the form of an old woman supported on a knotted cane, sits against a wall. Her battered face is shaded by a thick velum; her left hand rests on her lap. Light falling from an unknown source on the right illuminates the figure of the fairy, the cracked wall in the background (which bears the artist's signature), and the ground at her feet, where Norwid placed the title inscription" (H. Widacka "Norwid's Graphic Works" in Studia Norwidiana, no. 3-4, 1985-1986, p. 171). The work was created according to Norwid's pen drawing of 1856. The etching was exhibited in 1865 along with two other graphic works by Norwid at an exhibition in Nimes, held in a museum in the ancient temple of Diana at the foot of Mont-Cavalier. In 1868 prints from Norwid's plate were included in the monthly magazine L'Artiste. Very good condition.
