"Nowhere to Nowhere" is a continuation of the "Letter to Mom" project telling the stories of Belarusian women and men who were forced to leave their homes in 2020-2021. Nadya Sayapina documents and understands what it means not to be able to return home. While in other parts of the Letter to Mom project she focused on the experience of displacement, the sense of losing home, confusion and uncertainty, the series "Nowhere to Nowhere" refers to the search for a lost home in a new place . The artist asked people who had left Belarus to photograph a place that visually reminds them of their home or creates the same sense of comfort, security and kinship. This is a study of the practice of finding a home in a foreign country, of trying to return at least on the level of sensations and associations when return is impossible. "From Nowhere to Nowhere" is a series of monochrome postcards created on the basis of submitted photographs. On them - nature and city of different countries, non-tourist views. All images are created from the repeated phrase "I can take any road except the road home", handwritten in the language of the country where the author(s) of the photographs currently live.These words come from an interview conducted during the preparation of the first part of the series." BIOGRAM: artist, project developer, art tutor. Born in Belarus, 1989.
Using various forms - performance, multimedia, installations, paintings, texts, art therapy - she focuses on mediation as an opportunity to reveal the voices of "others." Her starting point is the individual stories of members of these communities, with whom she herself is connected in one way or another. Her methods draw on the practices of community-based art and action art, in which the artist: is tasked with giving space to the voices of the excluded and illuminating the problem through artistic means.
September 7, 2020. Nadya Sayapina was arrested at home and sentenced to 15 days in prison for participating in a collective action-art action against violence. Sayapina left Belarus in October.
