Xavier PILLATI 1848 - 1902 Painter and draughtsman. He came from a well-known family of artists, he was the father of Gustav Pillati and brother of Henryk. He studied in Warsaw at the School of Fine Arts (1857-61 or 1859-64) and at the Munich Academy (with Herman Anschütz and Alexander Wagner). He was a member of the Munich Kunstverein. After returning to Warsaw, he became a contributor to Warsaw magazines. The artist belonged alongside Michal Elwiro Andriolli to the most taken and most prolific Polish illustrators. In addition, he painted genre scenes, portraits and religious paintings. The author's inscription in the upper right corner says that the inspiration for the presented work was a painting by Gerard Dou (1613-1675), a Dutch painter of the Baroque period, a pupil of Rembrandt. On the back is a confirmation of authenticity written by the artist's son, sculptor Stefan Pillati (1974-1938).
