Biography
Illustrator, graphic artist, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, receiving her diploma in 1955, in the studio of Henryk Tomaszewski. From 1949 to 1969 she was a graphic editor at the Publishing Institute "Nasza Księgarnia". She received many awards and honors for her work, including the Bronze Poster at the International Biennial of Book Illustration in Bratislava (1967) and the Bronze Goats at the 1st Biennial of Art for Children in Poznań (1973). Characteristic features of her work include: strong, decisive colors in unobvious juxtapositions (though also a subdued, subtle range of pastel hues in other works), a predilection for strong outlines, delicate simplification of shapes, and a nostalgic, sometimes dreamlike mood. Among Krystyna Witkowska's best-known works are illustrations to Helena Bechlerowa's Mr. Florian's Clover, Wanda Chotomska's The Adventures of the Hedgehog from Under the City of Zgierz, Tadeusz Kubiak's Rainbow Umbrella, Joanna Kulmowa's Zasypianki, Janusz Korczak's When I Will Be Small Again, Bolesław Zagała's Why the Cat Sits in the Kitchen.
