Keith Haring (1958-1990) - American artist working in the trends of pop art and street art.
He began his interest in art very early. From 1976-1978 he studied graphic design at The Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh. At the age of 20 he moved to New York, where, inspired by graffiti art, he began studying at the School of Visual Arts.
His first works noticed by a wider audience were chalk drawings in the New York subway, captured by photographer Tseng Kwong Chi.
In 1980, the artist organized an exhibition at the 57 Club, at which time he participated in the "Times Square Exhibitons." His first major exhibition was held at Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1981, and the following year he participated in the Documenta 7 exhibition in Kassel, Germany.
In 1982 he met many other artists, including: Futura 2000, Kenny Scharf, Madonna and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The following year he participated in the Whitney Biennial, as well as the São Paulo Biennale. During this time he met Andy Warhol, who was the subject of several of his works such as Andy Mouse. His friendship with Warhol played a big role in his artistic success.
In 1988, he was diagnosed with HIV, which prompted him to establish the Keith Haring Foundation, a foundation that raises funds for organizations that care for children or AIDS patients. Haring died on February 16, 1990, at the age of 31, as a result of complications from AIDS.
