Biography
Attended the High School of Fine Arts in Cracow from 1947 to 1949. He is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (Faculty of Painting, diploma 1955) and art history at Jagiellonian University (diploma 1954). He has illustrated nearly two hundred books for children and adults published in Poland and dozens published abroad. He also does stage design (Wilam Horzyca Theater in Torun, 1978) and designs tapestries (St. Wyspianski Cooperative in Cracow). In 2000, Jakub Nowak dedicated a documentary film to him, titled. "Józef Wilkoń." In 2007 Grazyna Banaszkiewicz made another documentary, "Józef Wilkoń's Ark". Participant in the international charity action "Polish visual artists - to children", the proceeds of which are earmarked for the construction of the European Children's Friendship Center in Świdnica. His works are inspired by nature, and above all by animals, which he has made the main characters of his stories since the 1980s. Jozef Wilkoń has gained international fame and has been awarded many times in Poland and abroad. He creates "spatial illustrations," that is, animals made of wooden logs and sheet metal. In December 2009, the Józef Wilkoń "Arka" Foundation was established.
