Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was an Austrian painter and printmaker whose style is closest to Art Nouveau. He is considered one of the most important figurative painters of the early 20th century. Egon Schiele's work is an original, uniquely individualized interpretation of the principles of Art Nouveau decorativeness, but also its inspiration by the lines of nature. The artist's oeuvre includes portraits, self-portraits or landscapes, as well as extremely expressive nudes, considered pornography by many of Schiele's contemporaries. As a painter, Egon Schiele became famous for the intense emotions and raw sexuality conveyed in his works. The twisted body shapes and expressive lines appearing in his paintings and drawings allow him to qualify as an early representative of Expressionism.
