Lot description
Dimensions: frame 42 cm x 32 cm; print 28.4 cm x 20.4 cm
Technique: serigraphy (screen printing)
The serigraph "Wroclaw" belongs to the series "Hitchhiking Journeys", which Dwurnik created continuously since 1965/1966. The Wroclaw market square, depicted from a bird's eye view, is presented in a slightly grotesque manner, not fully corresponding to the proper layout of the architecture (e.g., the pillory is moved to the right side of the viewer, and there is no car traffic around the town hall). The work is signed by hand with the signature "E. Dwurnik" and the date 2005.
Edward Dwurnik (April 19, 1943 in Radzymin - October 28, 2018 in Warsaw) Polish painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Born in Radzymin, he graduated from Warsaw's Academy of Fine Arts in 1970, first from the sculpture department and later from the painting department. . His work has been awarded many times, including at the São Paulo Biennale (1983)., won the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Art Criticism Award (1981), the Independent Culture Committee "Solidarity" Award (1983), and the Coutts Contemporary Art Foundation Award (1992). He considered his most important formative experience to be his meeting with Nikifor in 1965, during his author's exhibition: he was my most important master, in fact the only one. (...) To this day, whenever I go outdoors or paint with watercolors, I have that exhibition before my eyes.
Dwurnik left behind several thousand paintings and drawings, which he meticulously recorded and cataloged. He became famous primarily for his painting series, such as Hitchhiking and Sportsmen. His style is characterized by expressive lines, bright colors and a grotesque take on reality - while remaining realistic. Especially Hitchhiking Travels are considered Dwurnik's most characteristic works - cityscapes without a horizon, with an accumulation of details, not entirely faithful to reality (the topography of terrain and urban objects, for example, was distorted), but often capturing it with humor.
