Andy Warhol (original name Andrew Warhol, August 6, 1928 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - February 22, 1987 New York, New York, USA) was an American painter, printmaker, filmmaker and leader of the American pop art movement. He began his career as an illustrator of promotional items. He later became known worldwide as a painter, director of avant-garde films and manager of the rock band The Velvet Underground. He was featured in several biographical films and documentaries about him. In 1991, a museum dedicated to his work was opened near his parents' hometown of Medzilaborce. Another museum opened three years later in his hometown of Pittsburgh.
