Considered one of the most prominent contemporary artists of icons, depicted in metaphysical figural compositions and landscapes. He participated in underground artistic life. In 1945, he took up studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow in the studio of Eugeniusz Eibisch. A year later he interrupted his studies. He received his diploma in 1945 after passing the exam externally. At that time, he joined Tadeusz Kantor's circle of acolytes, submitting an annex to the Group of Young Visual Artists transformed during the "thaw" into the Second Cracow Group. In 1957, he became a lecturer at the State Higher School of Visual Arts (now the Wladyslaw Strzeminski Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz),
Since 1976 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. Jerzy Nowosielski's works can be found in all important museum collections of contemporary art in Poland and also in many private collections in Poland and abroad.
"I entered my conscious painting with two doors: one was the consciousness of modern painting, the other was the consciousness of icons, the philosophy and theology of icons."
Jerzy Nowosielski
