NORWID Cyprian Kamil (1821-1883) - Martyr [Martyr]. 1863.
Etching, dry needle form. 9.4x8.8 on sheet form. 11.6x9.8 cm. Title in upper right corner, placed around Christos cross (XP). Composition signed and dated in lower left corner: "C. Norwid 1863." The engraving shows the Duke of Milan Lodovic Sforza (1452-1508) as a prisoner of Louis XII at Loches Castle. Two versions of this composition were created. Here we present variant II, about which H. Widacka writes: "Version II, titled 'Martyr,' is more precisely elaborated than the previous one, but is characterized by less expression. Lodovic's face has a completely different expression and appears more full, not so emaciated; the hairstyle gives the impression of being carefully arranged; the chain hoop has disappeared from his left forearm. The robes are more clearly marked, as is the cell window [...]. The thin, nervous line, more strongly etched in places, is further retouched with a dry needle" (H. Widacka "Norwid's graphic works" in Studia Norwidiana, no. 3-4, 1985-1986, p. 170). The etching was exhibited in 1865, along with two other graphic works by Norwid, at an exhibition in Nimes, held at the museum in the ancient temple of Diana at the foot of Mont-Cavalier. In 1868 prints from Norwid's plate were included in the monthly magazine L'Artiste. Very good condition.
