Lot information
This rare 17th century cabinet from the Augsburg region is a masterful example of German Baroque craftsmanship. At the time, Augsburg was one of the main centers of artistic production and cabinet-making, and this piece is a perfect example of luxury furniture that served not only practical purposes, but also as a symbol of the wealth and prestige of its owners. The cabinet is made of wood and its surface is decorated with ivory and tortoiseshell inlays. This combination of materials was characteristic of the so-called cabinet creation of the time, when the emphasis was on aesthetic richness and precise processing. Ivory adds a subtle contrast to the darker parts of the cabinet, while tortoiseshell adds a warm, vibrant sheen and depth. A typical feature of cabinets of this kind is an elaborate system of drawers and doors, often designed to provide secret storage for valuables. The interior of the cabinet is elaborated to the smallest detail, with an emphasis on symmetry and decorative elements that reflect the influence of the Baroque style and the wealth of ornaments. Such pieces of furniture were often part of the collections of noble families and were used to store important documents, jewelry or other valuables. At the same time, they fulfilled the function of an aesthetic element in the interiors of rich bourgeois or noble houses.condition:
