rosewood; 102.3 x 92 x 59.5 cm;
Central Europe, Galicia ?, early 20th century.
In the form of a small rectangular table with three drawers in the surround, supported on tapering legs fastened together at the short sides with joints, and under the top fastened with arched supports, with a small enclosed settee with two drawers superimposed on its top. The corners of the short sides of the top and the setting are rounded. On the shorter sides of the table, under the frame and between the joints, three decorative rungs. In the back of the table settee there is an elongated rectangular brass plaque with a representation of an old man gazing at the sun partially hidden behind the top. On the sides of the plaque square bas-relief florets, as well as the plaque
brass in the form of plaques framed by a strip.
The form and decoration of the table are appropriate for the Art Nouveau developed in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the so-called "geometrization". The table was decorated with a brass plaque with a representation probably symbolic, perhaps depicting a sunset.
This type of decoration harmonizes with the form and was typical of this style.
