Aviatic Association of Students of Lviv Polytechnic - the oldest Polish aviation organization operating at the Lviv Polytechnic from 1909 to 1939. The outbreak of World War I interrupted the activities of the Association, many of its members served in the aviation of the partitioned countries. It resumed its activities in 1923, began to restore the scientific library, conducted propaganda and educational activities, and returned to the topic of creating an aviation chair at the Lviv Polytechnic. Since 1924, the Association became involved in gliding-related activities, and the Association's Technical Section was established. In 1925, the Section began building a CW-I glider of the design of Union member Waclaw Czerwinski. The glider was built with the intention of competing in the Second All-Polish Gliding Competition in Oksywie, but was not completed on time. In 1926, the glider was presented during the LOPP Week. In 1927, Capt. Pilot Jan Lukasiewicz performed several shuras on this glider at the Sknilow airport. On March 13, 1928, several towed flights were made on this glider, and these were among the world's first trials of this type. The Aviatic Union did not have the capacity to train pilots, so a decision was made in February 1927 to create the Academic Aeroclub of Lviv, which was transformed into the Lviv Aeroclub in 1928. On the initiative of the Association, the search for gliding areas began. In May 1928, the First Gliding Expedition to Lysa Gora near Zloczow was organized, during which a number of flights were made in a CW-I glider. This expedition was a breakthrough for Polish gliding, proving that it was possible to practice the sport outside mountainous areas. During its duration, Szczepan Grzeszczyk set two Polish records - in the duration of the flight (4 min 13 s) and altitude (40 m). Experiences from flights near Zloczow resulted in the creation of Waclaw Czerwinski's next designs - CW-II and CW-III gliders. They were built in Szczuplakiewicz's carpentry workshop in Lviv at 52 Szpitalna Street, which in 1930 was transformed into the ZASPL Glider Workshop. In 1928, the Association's efforts to establish a chair of aviation were crowned with success. At the Mechanical Faculty of the Lviv Polytechnic, the Aeronautical Section was created, with Professor Stanislaw Lukasiewicz as its supervisor. A year later, the Aerodynamic Laboratory of the Lviv Polytechnic was established, headed by Dr. Zygmunt Fuchs, Eng. On April 19, 1928, representatives of the Aviatic Association (including Adam Nowotny and Waclaw Czerwiński) became members of the Aviation Section of the Provincial District of LOPP and were given the opportunity to promote gliding. In January 1929, the Slonne Mountains near Bezmiechowa were explored, and in the spring they became the destination of the Second Gliding Expedition organized by the Aviatic Association and the Lviv Aeroclub. The expedition also proved to be very fruitful - Szczepan Grzeszczyk set a new Polish record for the length of the flight (2 h 11 min 5 sec). Flights, on CW-II and CW-III gliders, were also performed by Rudolf Matz and Adam Nowotny. In addition, the area was considered to offer favorable conditions for gliding and it was decided to organize annual expeditions to the place. In the spring of 1930, the third expedition took place there, during which Rudolf Matz and Adam Nowotny fulfilled the conditions for obtaining the C category of glider pilot. During this expedition, people without any aviation experience, including Waclaw Czerwinski, took part in the training. In 1932, the Gliding School in Bezmiechowa, called the Gliding Academy in the Second Republic, was established there. (Wikipedia).
