J. Lelewel (1786-1861) - historian, numismatist, bibliographer, patriotic activist, ideologue of Polish democracy. In the years 1821-1824) professor at the University of Vilnius. In the November Uprising, a member of the National Government and president of the Patriotic Society, later one of the most prominent leaders of Polish emigration. Lelewel's death on May 29, 1861 added to a period of intense manifestations in Poland. His memory was commemorated with services in Catholic churches, a Protestant temple and Warsaw synagogues.
