print, metal, 29 x 21 cm, ed. 5/11

The series of self-portraits "To be at Sword's Points" (2016-2019) is part of the "Inciting Force" project. The images printed on metal plates are gestural frames of the author's performance, which has a well-balanced drama, where each previous "frame" is a continuation and development of the next. Important in the series is the symbolism of metal, which the artist repeatedly uses in her works as a matter of conceptual expression. Using a multi-layered structural-semiotic language, Zhanna Gladko in her self-portraits explores and transcodes familiar symbols from works that have appeared in art, literature, cinema, mass media, as well as mythological symbols, superstitions associated with various phenomena, reproduced in society as a stereotype. In the "On Knives" series it is the symbolism of weapons (swords, daggers). In languages all over the world we can find different varieties of idioms related to this topic. In Polish, these include: "on knives", "knife in the back", "on the blade of a knife", as well as a number of superstitions revolving around these symbols and objects: for example: "cutting hair with a knife," "knife on the table," "crossed knives," etc.

BIOGRAM:
Zhanna Gladko - Belarusian artist, lives and works in Minsk. From 2003 to 2009 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Minsk.
Through various media, she addresses issues such as gender politics, patriarchy, religion, culture, the art system and society. Aiming to criticize the patriarchal system in Belarus, she creates series of self-portraits that highlight many painful topics.
"Zhanna Gladko started the Incitin Force series in 2011. Self-portraits, or rather simply portraits, are an exercise in decoding and transcoding famous cultural works. In Created at Different Times and in Different Contexts, the artist plays with the ambiguity of cultural works. Through decoding and transcoding, the artist makes them into uncanny simulacra. Zhanna Gladko prints images on metal plates. Thanks to their mirrored surface, the plates reflect the face of the attentive viewer, who can become part of this game between reflections and projections, between Self and Image. This unique property of the plates suggests another possibility of remediating the image, a strategy that the artist repeatedly employs." Excerpted from Harutyun Alpetyan's curatorial text for Zhanna Gladko's solo exhibition in Yerevan in 2016.
