[WRÓBLEWSKI Walery - photograph with handwritten signature of the general]. [1908?]. Photograph form. 16.7x12 cm on a base form. 18.4x13.4 cm, most likely taken by Eleonora Lazarus.
The photo was most likely taken against the backdrop of the Gierszynski house in Ouarville near Paris, where the general spent the last few years of his life and where he died in August 1908. Information gleaned from an extensive article by Hanna Wieczorek published in December 2018 in Gazeta Wrocławska - "The story of the Lazarus and Diamand families is an amazing tale, in which Lvov, Paris, Warsaw and Wroclaw are threaded through" (https://gazetawroclawska.pl/historia-rodzin-lazarusow-i-diamandow-to-niesamowita-opowiesc-w-ktorej-przewija-sie-lwow-paryz-warszawa-i-wroclaw/ar/13702681). Photograph pasted on cardboard backing with red border. On the face a handwritten signature of the portrayed ("old hand"), on the back an inscription in ink: "Jenerał Komuny 1871 Walery Wróblewski". Very good condition. Rare.
Walery Antoni Wróblewski (born December 27, 1836 in Zoludek, died August 5, 1908 in Ouarville) - revolutionary-democratic activist, one of the leaders of the Reds, commander in the January Uprising, war chief of the Grodno province, war chief of the Lublin province in January 1864, general of the Paris Commune, activist of the Foreign Union of Polish Socialists (Wikipedia). During the Paris Commune, he organized and led the Commune's cavalry, and was commander of the Third Army, having under his command the defense of the left bank of the Seine against government troops. He managed to survive the "bloody week" and secretly left France on a Prussian passport. A death sentence was issued against him in absentia. After an amnesty in 1881, he returned to the Seine.
