A unique album of a German officer containing, among other things, 12 photographs of the departure of AK soldiers and nurses into German captivity, after the capitulation of the Warsaw Uprising.
Album with carved highlander motif [highlander's head with pipe, folk ornament patterns], made before the outbreak of World War II, in Zakopane in 1933, size 29 x 20.5cm, consists of 13 cards, 7 of which are filled with 46 photos and 3 postcards, and the other 6 are blank.
The album probably belonged to a German officer who was stationed in Poznan during the occupation, and after the outbreak of the Uprising was sent to Warsaw, where he had the opportunity to photograph the destruction and the columns of Home Army soldiers leaving the city. The album opens with a page of photographs from Poznan [including the building of the Imperial Castle, the entrance to the University Auditorium, the opera house and the sculptures standing at its entrance], on the following pages we have photographs of the monuments located in Wilson Park, other shots of the building of the University Auditorium and the Imperial Castle, a view from the street of the Medical Academy, and Liberty Square. The next 3 pages are 12 photographs of the exodus of AK soldiers and nurses after the surrender of the Warsaw Uprising. The photographs show destroyed streets and buildings and makeshift anti-tank barricades. The 6 photos show columns of soldiers, and nurses prepared to leave the city. You can see white and red armbands on their shoulders, nurses with headgear on which you can clearly see the Polish eagle, at the head of one of the columns a soldier carrying a Polish flag. In several shots, one can see bored German soldiers supervising the whole process [as if in a reluctant manner]. The photos are sharp, well cropped, the faces of the insurgents and the nurses recognizable. The next 3 pages of the album are photos and postcards from Kalisz, showing monuments, the park, the city [among others: City Hall in the Kalisz market square, the marina of the Kalisz Rowing Society, the oldest school in Kalisz - now the First High School, the theater, the Tribunal, the W.Boguslawski Theater].
