J. M. Slowikowski alias "Michael" (1915-2010) - Polish surgeon, urologist and oncologist, professor, university teacher, lieutenant colonel of the Polish Army. He studied medicine at the Jagiellonian University, receiving his diploma in 1939, and after his studies returned to his hometown, where he took up a job at the hospital. In the early days of the occupation, as a member of the Union of Armed Struggle, he organized the smuggling abroad of many officers and rank-and-file partisans. In 1940, he was instrumental in the release of the imprisoned Jan Karski thanks to the unjustified extension of his stay in the hospital and the administration of sleeping pills to the guards. [Author of some 200 publications, books and textbooks, his work dealt with the subject of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of complex cases, mainly in the field of pediatric surgery. He was a pioneer of blood exchange in newborns in cases of serological conflict and the creator of his own modifications of surgical methods, including surgical treatment of pancreatic cysts; vascular anastomosis in the treatment of hypertension in the portal vein basin and surgery by Rehbein's method in the treatment of congenital anal atresia and Hirschsprung's disease. In 1994, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Wroclaw Medical University. He was a member of the Polish Medical Society, the Society of Polish Surgeons, the Polish Society of Pediatric Surgeons (a founding member, including 1977-1980 as president, and since 1980 as an honorary member), the Polish Urological Society and the Union of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy (Wikipedia).
