Sebastian Kneipp (born May 17, 1821 in Stephansried, died June 17, 1897 in Bad Wörishofen) - Bavarian Catholic priest and theologian, parish priest of Wörishofen, proponent and promoter of hydrotherapy, a varied and complete diet and herbal medicine. In his publications and activities, he encouraged basic hygienic practices such as daily washing of the whole body, washing hair, washing makeup in the evening, using running water for washing, washing clothes and underwear regularly, walking, exercising or resting. He died at the age of 76, probably from cancer. He promoted the use of basic cosmetics (e.g., soap, oils) and the use of linen or hemp underwear under outer garments, which could be washed more often. He was one of the first to recommend the use of basic hygiene for children. He made the recommendations in his book The Healthy and Sick Child: A Guide for Caring Mothers and Fathers (Polish edition 1892). At the age of 26 he became seriously ill, and when he was 28 he was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. The experience of the illness prompted him to systematize the water treatment methods used at the time, which he described in the book My Water Treatment (Polish ed. 1923). He described the methods of Vincent Priessnitz and J. H. Rausse (actually Heinrich Friedrich Francke, 1805-1848), among others. Although he was not a doctor, he gave advice at the monastery. With the accompanying publicity of his activities, people began to appear in Wörishofen seeking help. Kneipp organized a bathhouse in the monastery's laundry, which in time expanded into a curative facility, and as a result Wörishofen became a spa town. Numerous establishments were set up in Germany and neighboring countries to cure with the methods Kneipp described. He invented malt coffee (Kneipp Coffee), and authored the recipe for grain bread (Kneipp Bread) - products still produced today. Creator and promoter of underwear made of linen or hemp fabrics, put under the outer garment (made of wool). Such underwear was easier to keep clean and could be washed more often. To him, among others, we owe the introduction of the simplest hygienic practices (daily washing, walking, resting) and the principles of proper nutrition into everyday life. He is the author of the following books: My Healing with Water (German: Meine Wasserkur, 1886), This is the way to live (German: So sollt ihr leben), My Will for the Healthy and Sick, Codicil to My Will for the Healthy, Healthy and Sick Child: a guide for caring mothers and fathers. Currently, there are the "Association of Kneipp Doctors" (about 1,000 members) and the "Kneipp Confederation" (about 250,000 members). (Wikipedia).
