"More than a decade ago, when I was working on the project and the book Pagan, I watched the Belarusian visual bond disappear: the colors of the houses and interiors, daily life, family photos previously filling the walls - disappear. In all homes there was an iconostasis with photos of all relatives, embroidered icons or handmade towels and paintings, damask or painted carpets - this culture began to disappear before our eyes with the disappearance of the previous generation. When a grandmother dies - the children or grandchildren throw almost everything out of the house. Or the opposite happens - children and grandchildren change their taste as the old aesthetics deteriorate. As a photographer, I realized that no one in Belarus is touching this subject. So the huge archipelago of traditional visual culture is about to disappear. It seemed very important to me to document the interiors of traditional houses." Andrei Liankevich
