[TATARKIEWICZ Wladyslaw]. Typed letter from Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz dated May 31, 1967, signed in his own handwriting, and a printed card dated April 1976 thanking him for his name-day wishes, also with the philosopher's handwritten signature.
Two-sided letter on sheet form. A5. Concerns translations of Tatarkiewicz's books into foreign languages. In the introduction he reports on his planned trip to the USA. Asks Najder to investigate the possibility of publishing the 3rd volume of "History of Philosophy" by Oxford University Press. He complains about the slowness of PWN in translating "History of Aesthetics" and "Happiness" into English. "I think both of these books, and in any case the 'History of Aesthetics' would be needed, the Anglo-Saxons have none like it," he says. At the end, he mentions a recent research stay in Italy. On the acknowledgements card (form 8.5x15.1 cm) a handwritten note and signature of Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz. Very good condition. Letter without envelope.
W. Tatarkiewicz (1886-1980) - Polish intellectual: philosopher, historian of philosophy and historian of art, ethicist and aesthetician, author of the well-known three-volume textbook on the history of philosophy. He taught at the University of Warsaw, the University of Vilnius and Poznan, also in Lausanne. "He went down in the history of Polish science mainly as an ethicist and axiologist, author of works that have been reprinted many times, including the 3-volume 'History of Philosophy,' containing a synthetic overview of philosophical views and trends in different periods of history, which was a basic academic textbook for many years, the 'History of Aesthetics' and the accessible Philosophy of Morals. He was a member of the Lvov-Warsaw philosophical school, created by Kazimierz Twardowski [...].
