[STRYJKOWSKI Julian]. Four manuscript letters from Julian Stryjkowski to Zdzislaw Najder, mainly concerning matters of the translation of "Voices in the Dark" and the screen adaptation of "Austeria," dated. 12 III, 31 V and 28 XI 1967 in Warsaw, one letter without date.
One-sided letter on A4 sheet and three double-sided letters on ca A5 sheet (one on the letterhead of the monthly magazine "Twórczość"). In the first letter, the author promises to send pieces of his novels "Voices in the Dark" and "Austeria" to Najder, with a request that he make an English synopsis of "Austeria" for the New York publishing house Harper and Row, which has expressed interest in the novel. He also informs that the book is coming out in West Germany and Yugoslavia (he touches on similar topics in an undated letter). He concludes the letter with the note: "Milosz in Paris had no words of praise for you. I know this from Jaroslaw [Iwaszkiewicz], who saw him in France." In the second letter he mentions Kawalerowicz's plans to film "Austeria." The script was written by Stryjkowski, Kawalerowicz and Konwicki. "The copyright, of course, belongs to me." - he adds. Another letter informs of the chances for an English translation of "Austeria" by the Harcourt Brace publishing house in New York (the book was published in 1971 by this very publishing house). "The matter of the film has advanced considerably, if nothing stands in the way the contract [...] will be signed soon. Kawalerowicz is expected to arrive from London on Thursday." He ends with the note: "If you meet Janek Kott greet him from me". Traces of folding, slight yellowing of the first letter.
